This is where is get’s a bit tricky… the betting stage. You have many options to choose from and can bet on either single numbers or groupings of numbers. Knowing your bets is one of the most invaluable skills you can develop. Once you have picked up the basic gist of them, they become like second nature.
You Can Bet on It!
While Roulette is a game of chance, knowing your bets is extremely important. There are two categories of bets in Roulette: Inside Bets and Outside Bets. The former is high risk but with high reward and the latter is safer, but with a smaller payout.
Inside Bets
Inside bets are those made on the numbers featured in the inner section of the table layout:
Straight Up – This is where you place your bet on a single number. While it is the riskiest bet on the table it also has a whopping high pay-out of 35 to 1.
Split Bet – These are wagers on two numbers placed next to one another on the table and pays out 17:1 if the ball lands on either.
Street Bet – This is where the player places his/her bet on any three numbers in a horizontal line. The odds are 11:1.
Corner Bet – This is a bet that can be placed on the intersecting horizontal and vertical line of four numbers and the payout is 8:1.
Line Bet – This is similar to a street bet except the players will bet on 2 x horizontal lines. The payout is 5:1.
Outside Bets
Outside bets are those placed on the outer bets featured on the Roulette table layout. They are low risk wagers, but also have a lower pay-out than inside bets. All outside bets are a predetermined set of numbers which can’t be changed.
Colours Bet – These are also known as ‘Black/Red Bet’. The player bets on either red numbers or black numbers. This is one of the more popular bets due to its quick recognition and simplicity; however the odds are minimal at 1 to 1, so the players can only double their bet.
Dozen Bet – Chips are placed on a predetermined twelve numbers (1-12, 13-24 or 25-36), since this is a large grouping of numbers the odds are more in your favour at 2 to 1.
Column Bet – These bets are placed on the “2 to 1” boxes below the columns.
High/Low Bet – These are bets placed on either the ‘high’ or ‘low’ boxes, indicating that you are betting on either the high numbers on the table, from 19-36, or on the low numbers, from 1-18. American Roulette tables do not have a ‘high’ or low’ box, but instead use ‘1-18’ and ‘19-36’ on the printed layout table.
Odds/Evens Bet – These are made almost the same way as colour bets. Players lay their bets on the ‘even’ or ‘odds’ box on the layout table. A win on these also pays evenly.
French bets
French Bets are based on the relation of numbers to another on the wheel and are only played on single-zero wheels.
Voisins Du Zéro / Neighbours of Zero – These bets cover the 17 numbers between 22 and 25 on the Roulette wheel: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25. Nine chips (or multiples thereof) are used to place this bet: two chips on the 0, 2, 3 trio; one on the 4-7 split; one on the 12-15 split; one on the 18-21 split; one on the 19-22 split; two on the 25, 26, 28, 29 corner; and one on the 32-35 split.
Orphelins/ Orphan’s bet – These bets Cover numbers 17, 34, 6 and 1, 20, 14, 31, 9. Players use five chips to place this bet: one on 1 and one on the 6-9, 14-17, 17-20 and 31-34 splits.
Le Tiers Du Cylinder/ Thirds of the Wheel – These bets Cover 12 numbers and Include the following numbers: 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16 and 33.
Jeu Zéro/ Zero Game – These bets cover the numbers closest to 0 in a single-zero game and include 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15.
Roulette Odds
Whatever bet you pick, make sure you know the odds and the payout. While Outside bets are more tempting because there is less chance of losing, they have low payouts. Depending on how much risk you’re willing to take, choose your bets wisely.
